Sirmione, one of the most visited villages on Lake Garda is situated on the peninsular that runs out into the centre of the lake along its southern bank midway between Desenzano and Peschiera. The main part of the village is a pedestrian only area, dominated by the Scaligera castle and surrounded by the original walls of the town, and now full of bars, restaurants and shops. A stroll to the end of the peninsular brings you to the Grotte di Catullo, the remains of a Roman villa which once belonged to the poet Catullus. From Sirmione it is easy to visit Verona, the home of Romeo and Juliet or have a day out in Venice taking the waterbus up the Grand Canal and then walk into St. Mark’s square either on an organised excursion or using the local buses and trains. Nearer at hand the local boat service will take you up and down the lake allowing you to visit other villages such as Garda, Bardolino, Salò or even Limone, Malcesine and Riva at the other end of the lake. You will also find many more local attractions such as the Gardaland, Caneva and the Movie Studio fun parks, the Safari Park Zoo at Bussolengo, and the Sigurtà Botanical gardens. All through the season there are daily markets in villages around the lake, so be sure to find out which is the nearest and do some bargain hunting for your leather bag or belt to take home!
